17/11/2008 - Airbourne @ Newcastle Carling Academy

Airbourne are a band that have exploded in recent months - a set this year at the Download festival seems to have propelled them into the public eye and judging by their frenetic set tonight, they don’t look like stopping anytime soon!

Waiting to go into the pit, I was very curious how Airbourne would handle themselves tonight. It’s often the case that bands that suddenly gain a lot of public appreciation tend to be a bit of a letdown, and they had a HUGE task ahead following the reception that the crowd gave Stone Gods.

After a long wait (nearly an hour), it was evident why Joel and the boys are gaining all of the applause. They seem to be a band that would be just as happy playing in a seedy pub full of bikers as they would in a larger venue, and before the end of the first song they had covered every inch of the stage and transported every member of the audience back into the heyds of 70s Rawk!

Not much time to mess about with lense changes in this set - all of the band members were moving targets who rarely stood still. Set was shot using the 24-70mm and 10-22mm lenses.

While I don’t like Airbourne’s live performances at all, you’ve got some fantastic shots here, John. Keep it up!

Thanks for the comments Ben :)

It’s funny you mention that about their live performances - I obviously can only base the review on the show I see and they were outstanding at the Academy, however I picked up the deluxe version of ‘Runnin Wild’ for the bonus live DVD and I was really dissapointed with it, extremely sub par :(
