12/08/2008 - Castro @ Newcastle Carling Academy

Local boys Castro proved to be quite the challenge to shoot - no matter how hard I tried, I just couldnt get the little buggers to stand still!

This gig turned out to be very interesting for many reasons, the main one being that I hadnt heard of any of the bands on the bill before and everything was to be a bit of a surprise.

First surprise of the night was that the venue was full! I’ve mentioned previously that the photo pit upstairs in the Academy is a bit of a joke but I’ve never struggled there as the place has always been pretty dead and they allow you to just walk around freely and shoot. A full crowd was in attendance tonight though and this meant I really had to think on my feet in terms of shooting positions to try to get some subject seperation and allow some differences in composition.

The night turned out to be a great one in the end - Castro were really fun to shoot, Xennons laidback approach contrasted completely with Jans aggressiveness but the two worked really well together.

Almost forgot - another surprise was just how wide my new Canon 10-22mm f3.5/4.5 actually goes! It was my first chance to try it at a gig tonight, and in a small venue like the Academy 2 it really gives you a completely different slant on shooting opportunities. Now I’m just waiting for my Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS to turn up!
