07/12/2008 – Apocalyptica @ Newcastle O2 Academy

It seems like I’ve been waiting forever for Apocalyptica to roll into town – 4 Fins – playing Metal – 3 of them on Cellos.

As far as ‘being a bit different’ goes, I’m thinking this gig should qualify, no?

As the house lights go down, the only things left illuminated on stage are the skull shaped chairs staring ominously out at the audience. Eicca, Paavo, Perttu and Mikko take their positions and off we go.

Its extremely surreal watching classically trained artists belt metal out on Cellos. Finely crafted wooden instruments dont unusually go hand in hand with distortion boxes and valve amps, yet somehow, it works!

The setlist tonight sees both the origional and covers side of Apocalyptica in action. As far as their own material goes, recent success story I’m not Jesus is strewn amongst Burn, Bittersweet and Life Burns, whilst the Metallica influence is brought about through covers of For Whom The Bell Tolls, Seek & Destroy and Enter Sandman.

Photographing this set was probably as easy as it ever gets. All about the stage there was potential for a shot that would be unusual – in fact the hardest part was probably picking the most unusual shot at any one time. I mean really – how often do you get to see Cellos and Hair Whips at the same time?
